There are many causes of procrastination but the main two seem to be either psychological or physiological problems that a person is suffering from. Below we will look a little more closely at these two causes and some others as well.

1. Psychological reasons for procrastination are varied and wide spread. However they usually are related to such issues as:-

Faced with a task that needs to be completed people suffering from psychological procrastination will fall into 3 distinct groups. The first group will be anxious about the task they need to complete. Those with a self defeating mentality will persuade themselves that they will fail even before they started. The final group who have low self worth will think that they don’t have the ability to succeed.

Many people when faced with the task will dramatically over estimate the amount of work required to complete the task and this can very soon become a habit. Breaking a procrastination habit can be very difficult

2. Physiological. The causes of this type of procrastination seem to surround the role that the prefrontal cortex of the brain plays in a person’s life. It is this area of the brain which controls our executive brain functions such as planning, the control of a person’s impulses, their attention span or lack of it and is also there to help filter out those distractions which might otherwise stimulate the brain.

Physiological procrastination can appear very similar to ADHD. The procrastination can be caused either by damage to this area of the brain or by a low activation level which is believed to be the root cause of ADHD. Symptoms are a lack of organisation and being unable to filter out distractions.

Others may procrastinate as they feel the work involved is too complicated and so the only way that a person can really deal with such a situation is as follows. They need to divide the task in hand up into smaller pieces and then perform each part one at a time, but they must provide themselves with a deadline for when they need to complete it by.

As you can see there are many causes of procrastination and it is wise to speak with either your doctor, therapist or psychiatrist in order to find out just what the underlying problem is. Sometimes procrastination can be cured by just reprogramming your subconscious that’s where products like procrastination blaster come in.
